Dear Hannah Wood,
In following the admission packet’s instructions to write a short essay introducing myself, my collegiate goals, my personal strengths, and one or more adversities that I have faced during my schooling years, hello.
My name is Anna Purse and to paint a picture of myself and my history, I was born and raised right here in Pittsburg. My home for as long as I can remember overlooks the Montague River and the skyline of downtown from Mount Lincoln, and my corner room window gives me ample opportunity to gawk at the many tourists that visit our city’s famous overlook. However, who I am is more than where I live and that I secretly people watch while I am in between chapters of my favorite books, books that help me explore the planet from the privacy of my book nook. Like the many freckles on my nose, every place has a history to chart, and each person has a time within it to chronicle. I enjoy discovering and learning from the life experiences preserved in biographies. Whether they be autobiographical or gathered by a Renaissance philosopher like Niccoló Machiavelli, I find my fellow man’s experiences and their thoughts ever have the potential to impact my own. I hope to acquire more of these lessons learned in the past and pass this fascination onto others that would follow me. Perchance I could inspire others to explore history by one day curating museum exhibits or by schooling a room of potential fellow history contributors! Such is my aim at Vern Hill, to make history known, my own included.
Strength of timeliness and strength in organization are both items of muscle that I would be confident listing on my resume should I find myself applying for a college job. My key strengths are not necessarily obtained in the gymnasium, although at the request of my friend and the team coach, because they needed a twelfth player, I did try out and make the varsity tennis team my sophomore year of high school. As you might imagine, it being my first season of playing tennis, I was awarded the most improved player trophy, and like my school attendance, I attended 100 percent of the practices and games. To be totally honest, I would prefer to be a sports spectator. What is a championship sports match without an audience of fans anyway? After my short-lived tennis career, you would have found me participating in athletics with my voice, my hands, and perhaps a bucket of popcorn, but to my strengths, you would have found me in the bleachers on time, if not early, when I had made plans with a friend or two to attend a game. As for organization and keeping the order of things, Herodotus, the man dubbed the Father of History, sets the bar, and he started setting the bar 400 years before the birth of Christ. Similar to how he investigated and organized records that documented the Greco-Persian Wars, so did I on a much smaller scale with our high school's newsletter team during my sophomore year and with our school's yearbook team my junior and senior years.
The final request of this essay I would not have candidly answered for the chance it would have shed a poor light on my mother, but she has assured me that she wants no detail concealed, except perhaps the time she chose to scorch her curly red hair with a straight perm. The truth is my mother was fifteen when I was born, and until I was old enough for kindergarten, my great grandmother was alive and careful to take care of me, caring alongside my mother. Hence the adversity my mother faced after my great grandmother passed away when I turned five years old has spilled over to me these past thirteen years. I learned much earlier than most to vacuum up the sugar dust of a cookie taken from the cookie jar to prevent ants, that dishes are much more difficult to wash after sitting dirty for a week, and the importance of having a hidden key outside the house especially on Fridays in the wintertime when my mother is away at work after school. Still, I’m thankful for my mother; she has taught me by example to readily share my gifts and passions with others, that doing so always, gives one a deeply rooted sense of purpose. My mother might not know how to balance a budget, but she keeps us from overspending one. She might not have the benefit of a husband providing for her, but she has faithfully protected me throughout the several guy relationships she has had over the years. She proves the famous proverb, "As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise." (Proverbs 27:21)
Vern Hill’s History program excites me, and I hope to gain admission. Having completed all the entry requirements and far exceeded the requisite grade point average with my 3.97 GPA, admission to Vern Hill College will enable me to continue helping my mother at home while keeping my sights set on my own gifts and passions, ones that I might one day share with the world, i.e., my history.
Sincerely,
Anna Purse
